Big-vein disease (BVD): Symptoms and damage in lettuce and similar crops
1709890758744.png

WHO CAUSES IT?

The vein enlargement virus, known as BVD (Big Vein Disease), is a pathogen that affects lettuce and other similar plants. This virus is transmitted mainly by a soil fungus called Olpidium brassicae, which acts as a vector. The infection cycle begins when the fungal zoospores, which contain the virus, come into contact with the roots of susceptible plants. Once in the roots, the virus enters the vascular system of the plant and is transported to the leaves. As the virus multiplies, it accumulates in plant tissues, affecting the development and morphology of leaves. Although the virus does not reproduce in the fungal vector, it can survive on fungal spores in the soil, allowing the pathogen to persist in fields for long periods, even in the absence of crops.

SYMPTOMS

The vein widening virus causes deformations and alterations in the growth of lettuce, affecting the quality of the crop. The disease manifests itself mainly on the leaves, which show a distinctive pattern of widening of the veins, accompanied by irregular growth. This affects the normal development of the plant, causing a reduction in the yield and commercial appearance of the product.
- Visible widening of the veins on the leaves, especially in older leaves.
- Uneven growth of leaves, which have thicker edges.
- Chlorosis or discoloration in the areas near the ribs.
- General delay in plant growth.
- Rough and deformed appearance of the leaves in advanced cases.

Biological control

-

Recommendations

- Avoid excessive or prolonged irrigation, since humid conditions favor the proliferation of the fungal vector and the spread of the virus.
- Implement crop rotations with species not susceptible to the virus or the fungal vector to reduce the inoculum in the soil.
- Use lettuce varieties that are resistant or tolerant to the disease when available.
- Maintain good soil drainage to limit the presence of favorable conditions for *Olpidium brassicae*.
- Monitor the soil and plants regularly to detect the first signs of infection and act preventively.
- Disinfect the tools and equipment used in the field to prevent the spread of fungal spores between plots.
- Avoid transplanting infected seedlings and ensure that planting material is free of pathogens.
- Apply preventive fungicide treatments aimed at the vector fungus when environmental conditions are conducive to its development.
