WHO CAUSES IT?
Temnorhinus mendicus, known as cleonus, is a beetle that belongs to the Curculionidae family. This insect is characterized by its robust body and its ability to cause significant damage to agricultural crops. Adults emerge from the soil in spring and feed on plant leaves, while females lay their eggs in the soil near the base of host plants. The larvae hatch and head to the roots, where they feed and cause extensive damage. These larvae go through several larval stages before pupating in the soil. After pupation, the adults emerge and the cycle begins again. This process is favored by warm temperatures and humid soils, conditions that facilitate the development and reproduction of the insect. Cleonus's ability to adapt to different environmental conditions and its ability to hide in the ground make it challenging to control.
SYMPTOMS
The disease caused by Temnorhinus mendicus in sugar beets mainly affects the roots and vascular system of the plant, compromising its ability to absorb water and nutrients.
- Damaged roots with galleries and cavities.
- Withering of the leaves.
- Discoloration and yellowing of the leaves.
- Reduction of plant growth.
- Decrease in the quality and quantity of the harvest.
- Increased susceptibility to other diseases.
- Plants easily uprooted due to loss of roots.
