WHO CAUSES IT?
Liriomyza spp. It is a genus of small mining flies, whose biological cycle includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Adult females pierce the leaves of plants to feed and deposit their eggs inside the leaf tissue. The larvae hatch from the eggs and, since they do not feed on the sap directly, they excavate tunnels between the layers of the leaf tissue. These galleries are the characteristic damage seen on the leaves. Once they complete their larval phase, the larvae fall to the ground, where they burrow to pupate. Later, the adults emerge from the soil and restart the life cycle. Adult females live approximately 2-3 weeks, and during that period they can lay between 50 and 300 eggs, depending on environmental conditions. This process of rapid and continuous reproduction contributes to the proliferation of the pest in short periods of time.
SYMPTOMS
The leafminer caused by Liriomyza spp. It seriously affects crops such as lettuce, since the larvae feed on the internal tissue of the leaves, weakening the plants and reducing their photosynthetic capacity. Damage caused by larval galleries can predispose plants to secondary infections and affect the marketing of the product due to the disfigured appearance of the leaves.
- Appearance of sinuous, whitish galleries on the leaves.
- Necrotic Taches caused by oviposition and feeding by adults.
- Reduction in the growth of young plants.
- Premature defoliation in severe infections.
- Appearance of open lesions that facilitate access to secondary pathogens.
