WHO CAUSES IT?
Colletotrichum sp. is a group of ascomycete fungi that includes several pathogenic species that affect a wide range of crops, including berries. These fungi produce sporulation structures, known as acervuli, on infected plant surfaces. The acervuli release spores called conidia, which are spread primarily through water and wind. When conidia land on moist plant tissues, they germinate and produce hyphae that invade host tissues, causing necrosis and lesions. Infections can spread rapidly under conditions of high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures. Additionally, Colletotrichum can form resistance structures called sclerotia, which allow it to survive in soil and plant debris during unfavorable conditions. These resistant structures can germinate when conditions become favorable again, restarting the infectious process.
SYMPTOMS
The disease known as anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum sp., severely affects berries, causing a variety of symptoms that compromise the quality and production of the fruits. The disease can manifest itself in any part of the plant, including leaves, stems and fruits. Symptoms include:
- Black or brown Taches on leaves, stems and fruits.
- Sunken lesions on fruits, often with dark edges.
- Premature fall of leaves and fruits.
- Discoloration and necrosis in infected tissues.
- Formation of acervuli with masses of pink or orange spores in the lesions.
- Reduction in plant growth and vigor.
- Mummified or rotten fruits.
